Please go to the links tab for more information! Extra Credit is due by April 27th. They will NOT be accepted late and will not count if you have missing assignments.
Did your child turn in a Geologic Event Project????
All students should have shared their project by now with their classmates. If your child has a 0 or -- for a grade, then they did NOT complete a project. I have reminded students daily and have personally talked to students that have not done their work about how they CAN complete the projects. Students had a couple of weeks in class to work and were always welcome to come in at lunch and after school to get help or complete their work. Please talk to your student and help them finish their work if it is still not done. Thank you in advance for your help!
Tonight's Homework 3-1-12
Answer questions 1-4 on page 117 in your book. You do NOT need to copy the question but DO need to RESTATE the question in your answer.
#1 What can rock fossils and original remains show about Earth's past?
#2 Why do rock fossils form in sedimentary rock and not in igneous rock?
#3 How do tree rings and ice cores help scientists understand how Earth has changed over time?
#4 If you uncovered fossils of tropical fish and palm trees, what could you say about the environment at the time the fossils formed?

Binder Checks and Test!
Students will have a "binder check" on Thursday, November 3rd. They will also be taking their Rocks and Rock Cycle Test on November 3rd. We have been working hard to review and prepare for this test. All homework assignments from last week and other in class assignments will serve as great review papers. Students were also given a review packet on Friday. I have linked the binder checklist and another review paper in the agenda section of this site. Please refer to the appropriate science class.
Power School Issues!
Unfortunately, I have not been able to log into Power School and update grades for a couple of days now! The problem is being looked into and other teachers are experiencing the same problems. Please be patient as the issue(s) gets resolved. This is completely out of my hands. Thank you in advance for your understanding.
Have you checked your child's grade lately?
Please be sure to log into the Parent Portal to keep up to date with your child's progress. I am currently getting papers graded and should be caught up by Wednesday.

Just a Note!
I want to thank everyone for a great second week of school! I am also so pleased to know that parents and students are using our class website! It has been very frustrating coming back to school with copiers on the fritz! I do apologize that I was not able to scan and upload the worksheets done this week. The copy machines are also scanners. Looking forward to another great week!!!!
Welcome Back to School!!!!
Welcome to 6th Grade Science! We are going to have a wonderful year exploring, investigating and digging deeper into topics covered in earlier years. I am very excited to be your teacher this year!
What will I learn this year?
This year we will be learning how rocks are made, the affect of plate tectonics and the Earth, how energy is transferred, and ecosystems. We will be completing many hands on experiments, reading science literature, and creating projects to help each student develop a thorough understanding of the concepts covered. Along with these components students will also have other assignments, quizzes, and tests. If you would like to review a more detailed curriculum, please visit the State of Michigan’s Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCEs) at http://www.michigan.gov/mde/
Materials
Students will have several textbooks during the year. At the beginning of each unit, students will check out a new textbook. Each time, students and parents will complete a book assessment form. These need to be signed and returned.
Students will be asked to maintain a science binder. This binder needs to be 1-1/2 to 2 inches and include 10 dividers. It is to be used only for science. You are responsible for keeping it organized. I will be checking it periodically to see that it is being used effectively. The binder will be divided into units of study so that all information and material regarding a concept is together and easier to review for a test. Students need to keep all material so they may review for the end of the year test.
What if my child needs additional help?
Any student needing extra help outside of class can do so by setting up a time to meet with me at lunch, or come in early for “morning help” which is held in the media center from 7:15 to 7:53. Students may also stay after school for additional help or work time on a computer.
How will information be communicated to me about my student?
I have several ways I will communicate information to you and your student during the school year. I will maintain a Weebly website. On this site, you will be able to see what work has been done, what I have planned for the week, links to assignments and other materials used in class. These assignments and notes can be downloaded and printed at home. You will also have access to your student’s academic progress by logging onto Power School. A tutorial can be found on our district website at www.lakeview.misd.net. Specific concerns will either be emailed to you or a phone call will be made home.
How do I contact my student’s teacher?
I’ll be happy to address concerns or questions throughout the year as they arise. Feel free to contact me by phone 586-445-4130, email (preferred) hpickering@scslakeview-k12.com, or write me a note.
I am excited about a new school year! Welcome to Jefferson Middle School! I hope that it is a wonderful experience for you.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Heather Pickering
